Jenx, or Jenks as it was formerly know, has been a mainstay of the Blackpool music scene since the late 1960's. The once legendary Jenks Bar, on Talbot Rd. (now Rumours) was the initial birth place of Jenx sometime in the late 1960's. In the late 50's Jenkinsons Cafe as it was way back then, used to sell hand made chocolates!.
Sometime during the late 60's Jenkinsons Cafe relicenced and became a bar, shortening the name to Jenks. The bar was a renowned live music venue throughout the 70's, and witnessed many classic performances, from world famous artists like The Buzzcocks, and The Prefects, as seen on the Punk '77 website here. The bar however, was destroyed by a mysterious fire in the early 1980's.
After the fire, Jenks the indie night was born, providing the same style of eclectic alternative music as performed live at the bar to the discerning indie/alternative fans of Blackpool. Leading a nomadic life, Jenks passed from venue to venue, before settling at the Main Entrance club (now Klub DNA) in the late 90's. When the venue closed down in very dubious circumstances on New Years Day in January 2001, the homeless Jenks night came to the Liquidlounge for the first time. In fact it was brought to us by one of the DJs at that time, Tom Marshall, to whom we will be eternally grateful. A wet Thursday night in January saw a capacity crowd celebrate a new venue and a new era. Jenks had come home.
The instant success of Jenx (renamed by Claire), and the wonderful people it attracted (hard to find in Blackpool), saw a new beginning for the longest running club night in the country. A swift move from Thursdays to it's original Friday night cemented the relationship with Jenx, Liquidlounge and the Blackpool indie lovers. It also marked the death knell for dance music at Liquidlounge as it closed its doors to repetitive beats and embraced a far friendlier, dedicated and wonderful world of indie.
We are interested in your Jenx memories. The night has been running for quite some time now, and we know some of you must have stories from back in 'the good ol days. Please Get in touch and share you memories (the earlier the better) with the new Jenx generation.
